Ayurveda, translated from Sanskrit, means “The Science of Life” (ayur meaning life, veda meaning knowledge) and is regarded by scholars as the oldest healing system in the world. At the heart of Ayurvedic’s self-healing philosophy is the concept that our bodies are a microcosm of the universe with 3 universal governing forces named Doshas at work: Vata (air), Pitta (fire) and Kapha (earth). Every single one of us has a unique pattern of energy that corresponds with these Doshas, a combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics that is our inherent constitution. Achieving balance and harmony between the Doshas is the aim of therapy and the foundations of health and well being in Ayurvedic medicine.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, Balancing the Life Force within

“The journey is the reward."
Tao Saying
The roots of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) date back almost 5,000 years and is a time-honored tradition that is based on the fundamental principle of a ‘life-force’ or Qi which flows through the body. An imbalance or blockage of Qi is believed to cause illness while a balance and smooth flow of Qi causes health and well-being. Qi flows along a network of meridians (channels) to empower each and every organ in the body. The meridian network comprises a system of 6 yin and 6 yang channels and 8 extraordinary channels that are spread throughout the body. Situated along the meridians are strategic vital points called acupoints where Qi can be stimulated through various traditional techniques. The holistic Chinese medicine tradition embraces Taoist philosophies and its preventive approach to health by focusing on diet, movement, spiritual and emotional well-being.

Japanese Ki, Holding the Healing Bowl

“Just for today, live life gratefully."
Dr. Mikao Usui
Founder of Reiki
The principles of this Japanese healing system are derived primarily from TCM. Although heavily influenced by Chinese Ideologies and methods, the Japanese have distinctive features of their own, including shiatsu and reiki therapies and uniquely Japanese diagnostic techniques, manipulative therapies and folk remedies. The manipulation of Ki, the life force that sustains the body is an essential component of Japanese healing techniques. The principal goal of treatment is Kyo-jitsu-ho-sha, which means replenishing a Ki deficiency or dispersing excess Ki, to regain balance and harmony.

Thai Healing Legacy, Harmony with Nature

“We pray for the one whom we touch, that he will be happy
and that any illness will be released from him."
Nuat bo’rarn Therapist’s Prayer
Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha is revered by practitioners as the ‘Father Doctor’ of Thai medicine. He was a renowned Ayurvedic doctor considered by most to be the original teacher of Thai massage and the source of the country’s complex herbal pharmacopoeia. In Thai philosophy, human life is holistically viewed as a combination of 3 essences: body, citta (heart/mind) and energy. Working with the essences, Thai medicine is split into 3 disciplines: spiritual healing, manipulative massage and diet/herbal medicine. As with other holistic Asian traditions, Thai medicine believes in harmony, within the body, citta ( heart/mind ) and energy with the aim of therapy being to rebalance the essences thereby returning to health and harmony.

Indonesian Jamu, Healing Elixir

“Every breath is a prayer.”
Balinese saying
Within Indonesia itself, healing traditions vary from region to region while only one tradition remains constant and that is Jamu. Arguably the best reference on Indonesia’s Jamu (herbal medicine) is Serat Kawruh bab Jampi-Jampi (A treatise on all manner of cures) and it comprises a total of 1,734 formulae made from natural ingredients, many of which are still in use today. Jamu is touted as the ancient elixir of life and many Indonesians swear by its effectiveness with up to 80 per cent of the population believed to drink a glass of Jamu daily after reciting a prayer. Jamu has 4 basic functions: to cure illness; to prevent disease and maintain good health by promoting blood circulation and increasing metabolism; to relieve aches and pains by reducing inflammation and aiding digestion and to correct malfunctions. From the days when it was first used, Jamu has permeated all levels of society and today it is fast gaining popularity around the world.

Filipino Tradition, The Natural Spa

“Use all the natural power to heal because all of us come from God.
One can overpower illnesses and cure oneself using this natural healing power”
Traditional Filipino Healer
Traditional Filipino medicine is believed to have been first recorded in the annals of Asian travelers starting circa the 8th century and indigenous Philippine therapies is influenced by Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda and Unani-Tibb medicine (Southern Indian Healing Culture). Filipino healers believe that the Kalawakan (universe) and Sangkatauhan (humankind) are intricately interlinked and any fluctuations occurring within the body are a direct consequence of environmental change and vice versa. Traditional medicine labels everything on earth from people to plants, foods and daily activities as Lamig (cold) or Init (hot) with balance between both being the key to health and harmony. A dominance in one humor will result in disease. To restore balance and health in the body, a hot type disease will be treated with a cold medicinal plant.
